Sunburn during childhood can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life, so it’s important for school children to learn how to enjoy the sun safely.

Most people think about sunburn as something that happens on holiday or in hot, sunny places, but research has shown more than a third of people experience significant sunburn whilst in the UK.

This session aims to equip children with the knowledge and understanding of what is required to ensure they stay safe in the sun whilst still having fun.

It will also encourage them to make healthier choices so as to as to reduce health issues later in life.

Pupils Will:

  • Be aware that the sun has beneficial and harmful effects for living things.

  • Be aware that sun exposure causes sunburn and skin and eye damage and that colour change from our natural skin colour is a sign of damage.

  • Be aware of the harmful effects the sun can have on our health if they suffer from over exposure.

  • Have the knowledge and understanding of what is required to enable them to stay safe in the sun, without compromising on having fun.

  • Be aware of what action to take in an emergency situation .

  • Be equipped with the knowledge to help them make healthier lifestyle choices.
