Asthma is a common long-term condition that affects the airways transporting air to/from the lungs. 

The incidence of Asthma is increasing, with on average 1 in every 11 children being affected. It is therefore a major concern in schools.

This course is designed to equip staff with a basic understanding of the condition, along with advice to assist them with recognizing symptoms and dealing with the condition.

It will assist the school as a whole by increasing staff confidence to enable them to support children and young people to manage their asthma, therefore providing them with a greater opportunity to access education to ensure they reach their full academic potential.

Staff Will:

  • Have an increased understanding of the condition.

  • Be aware of the signs and symptoms of asthma.

  • Have an increased awareness of the common triggers.

  • Have an increased awareness of how to manage the condition.

  • Have an increased awareness of the types of medication/devices used in the treatment of the condition.

  • Have an increased awareness of the action to be taken in an emergency situation.

  • Have an increased understanding of the need to plan for off site visits.

  • Be aware of how schools can help reduce the incidence of asthma attacks.

  • Have an increased understanding of the documentation required in school to ensure best practice.

  • Be aware of where to find further information regarding asthma.
