A large collection of various nuts. Nuts are a common allergy that can trigger anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is an extreme and severe allergic reaction, where the whole body is affected, often within minutes of exposure to the substance which causes the allergic reaction but sometimes not until a few hours later.

Around one third of the UK population will develop an allergy at some time in their lives.  A significant proportion of these will suffer severe symptoms.  It is therefore a major concern in schools.

This course is designed to equip staff with a basic understanding of the condition, along with advice to assist them with recognizing symptoms and dealing with an emergency situation.

It will assist the school as a whole by increasing staff confidence to enable them to support/manage children and young people who are likely to suffer an anaphylactic reaction, therefore providing them with a greater opportunity to access education to ensure they reach their full academic potential.

Staff Will:

  • Have an increased understanding of the condition.

  • Be aware of the signs and symptoms.

  • Have an increased awareness of the common triggers.

  • Have an increased awareness of how to manage the condition.

  • Have an increased awareness of the types of medication/devices used in the treatment of the condition.

  • Have an increased awareness of the action to be taken in an emergency situation.

  • Have an increased understanding of the need to plan for off site visits.

  • Be aware of how schools can help reduce the incidence of anaphylaxis.
